Instead of moving side to side burnishers operate in a straight line going back and forth. It is used most commonly on hardwood linoleum and marble floors because these surfaces cannot be damaged by the spinning pad.

There are many types of pads that can be used for floor burnishing but some of the more common ones are a light tan in color and or have natural fibers incorporated in to the weave of the pads material. Acrylic floor finishes and their inherent properties are designed around three major ingredients. Floor burnishing requires a burnisher. For example a cordless floor burnisher may be a better solution than a corded electric burnisher for spaces. Note that both processes involve using a floor machine buffer or burnisher to polish a floor that has finish also known as wax to produce a glossy appearance by removing the top layer of finish which may have become scratched and dirty due to floor traffic.
